The Italian School of Lagos was born in the Sixties on the initiative of some representatives of Italian companies with economic interests in Nigeria in order to provide families of employees working in the country the opportunity to give their children an education consistent with their cultural roots and traditions.

In the second half of the 1980s, the opportunity to equip the School with larger facilities, including sports facilities, led the Management Committee to mobilize the Italian Community and the various companies for the construction of a new headquarters.

The project, which began with the purchase of the land in February 1988, was carried out by Italian companies in the construction sector, associated for this purpose; the structure hosting the classrooms and offices was completed in January 1991 while the sports facilities in May 1992. The new school complex was named after Enrico Mattei.

On April 19, 2004, with D.M. 267/3633, parity was recognized for all courses of study active at the time, namely the Nursery school, Primary, Lower Secondary School and the Scientific High School.

In the 2011-2012 school year, at the explicit request of the parents and for greater consistency with the international character of the school, a new higher education department was inaugurated, the Linguistic High school, replacing the previous Scientific high school. On 15 June 2012 (D.M.3687), the parity was granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The school complex is located in a residential area, called Lekki, on a land of 1.7 hectares. Functional structure built by Italian companies, it consists of a large building that houses numerous classrooms and offices and various sports facilities.

Specifically, the school has the following facilities:

  • 16 classrooms
  • classroom LIM
  • science classroom
  • computer science laboratory
  • art workshop
  • 4 offices
  • teaching room
  • football field with training field
  • gymnasium in a separate building, air-conditioned and paved in wood
  • 2 tennis courts
  • swimming pool 25m long
  • library
  • 2 play areas in the garden for the little ones

In addition, to encourage the cultural integration of foreign students, it was decided to include a partial degree of bilingualism in the Nursery School and Primary School, while Italian remains the fundamental language used for most of the teaching activity.

Consequently, in the Nursery School the Italian teacher is supported by an English mother tongue teacher; in Primary School, one hour of mathematics and one hour of science are taught in English by a mother-tongue teacher.

In addition to the curricular lessons, whose programs follow the ministerial guidelines, the school also offers a series of extra sports or other activities. There are also active empowerment lessons for pupils with cultural or linguistic difficulties.

The teachers, mostly Italian, are all in possession of the qualifications required by our current legislation.
